Mother's Day is right around the corner and if you're anything like me, you wait until the very last minute to find gifts for the amazing special Mama in your life. [I'm so sorry Mom.]
Luckily, this year I put my mind to the test and thought of an eco-friendly route for Mother's Day 2021. I felt so inspired that I figured I'd make a blog post to share with you all in case you're in the same boat. No judgement here. We still all love our Mamas.
THIS POST CONTAINS AFFILIATE LINKS & ADS WHICH MEANS IF YOU WERE TO CLICK A LINK AND PURCHASE THE PRODUCT I MAY RECEIVE COMMISSION OR CREDIT FOR YOUR PURCHASE AT NO EXTRA COST TO YOU. BY DOING THIS, YOU HELP SUPPORT MY FAMILY. TO READ MORE ON AFFILIATE LINK & AD DISCLOSURES, CLICK HERE.
Let's face it, the majority of today's day and age grab a card and flowers for their mothers on Mother's Day just for the solid fact that it's fast, easy & you know she'll appreciate the gesture.
Well, this year, I didn't want to do that. Just because Mother's Day 2021 is in 4 days doesn't mean I can't put a little thought behind my gifts. Whether the gift be your time or an item, keep scrolling to find the 8 gift ideas that won't just end up in the trash this year.
If your Mama has a green thumb, seeds are an amazing gift for Mother's Day. After all, Mother's Day is like the most looked forward to holiday around South West Michigan.. it usually means we can plant our crops. I have seen a ton of ideas of providing a variety of different seeds for different recipes, which I thought was cute. You'd provide tomato, jalapeno & cilantro seeds for an inspired salsa kit. Package the seeds in an egg carton with some twine and you have an adorable DIY salsa kit gift set!
& if your mama doesn't have a green thumb, I suggest flowers from a local nursery or a beautiful low maintenance house plant. Plants are literal life and to anyone who doesn't own at least one plant, go out and buy one. Snake plants, Bamboo Plants, Peace Lilies are just a few of the very easy plants to care for. Who knows, you may gift a plant and inspire the receiver to find a new hobby in gardening!
HOME DECOR / YARD DECOR
It's Spring time! Gift your mother a beautiful handcrafted wind chime or a stunning bird bath she can set by her porch. Family photos she can hang out her walls, those cute wooden quotes. Possibilities are endless with home décor. But if you know your mom's style, this should be an easy task to find something that will fit her home and that she will cherish. I know many small business owners who make those wooden quote signs, but if you can't find anyone around you, try to find home décor at the local thrift shops before resorting to a department store. If you can support a local business or give a secondhand item life again, that's a win in my book.
Now, we can debate if this is really an eco-friendly option because it all depends on where you're buying the gift card to. When I think of purchasing a gift card, I envision a gift card to a salon to spoil her or to the movies so she can go see a film. Not a $20 gift card to a department store so to say.
I don't know about you, but I know that I adore being spoiled with actions, especially when people cook me a meal. Maybe that has to do with me not loving to be in the kitchen or what. Planning a simple brunch with one main course and a few sides dishes. Maybe throw in a mimosa or two and next thing you know, you & your mother will have a day to remember!
A SUSTAINABLY MADE HANDBAG
Shopping new is obviously not eco-friendly but in situations where you want to gift someone something new because they deserve it. Shop ethically, shop sustainably, make sure the company uses eco-friendly fabrics and doesn't have their workers in sweat shops. Support the companies who do good. I recently purchased a wallet/clutch from The Sak, make sure to check them out if you are interested in getting a handbag!
JEWELRY FROM RECYCLED MATERIALS
Get crafty and find some cool items you could recycle into jewelry. Depending on what you find, figure if you can create a necklace, bracelet, earrings or a ring. Double the treat when Mom finds out you made them yourself!
ZERO WASTE STARTER KIT
Last but most certainly not least, if all else fails, resort to a zero waste starter kit. I would personally gift this everyday zero waste kit, but you could get creative and create a kit for the kitchen, bathroom or laundry room. Possibilities are endless.
I hope I've inspired you for a gift this season!
For everyone whose already got their gifts, what did you get?
I'm curious to know!
