Creating The Perfect Maternity Capsule Wardrobe

Updated: Sep 14, 2021

Maternity wear doesn't have to be complicated. A lot of women think that the clothing options they wear during pregnancy has to be marketed or sold as maternity wear. The truth on that is, you actually don't. I used pregnancy wear below as a model, but if you find options that are not marketed towards pregnancy but work for your pregnant body, wear them. Whatever is most comfortable for you to grow.

It's also okay to not have a closet full of clothes. Having a wardrobe with basics and few staples creates endless outfit options. Don't bring items into your closet that does not serve you good. If it doesn't fit or you simply do not like the color, do not keep it. Creating that capsule wardrobe, especially during pregnancy, provides you with that sense of 'put together' and 'organized'. You only have so many options and they all look nice.

I have put together my idea of the perfect maternity capsule wardrobe.

UNDER ESSENTIALS

NURSING BRAS

Secret Treasures Maternity Triangle Bra - Wal-Mart - $9.88

-- 5 to 6, I cannot stress enough how important good fitting nursing bras are. Not only are they great for growing with your enlarging breasts, but during those first few days postpartum, your milk comes in.. and by golly, you're going to be so thankful that your nursing bra offers those melons SUPPORT. I lived in nursing bras for the whole first year of postpartum. They are absolutely necessary for nursing baby comfortably and discreetly while still allowing the support that your breasts need.

UNDIES

Emprella Maternity Underwear Under Bump, 3-Pack - Wal-Mart - $9.99

-- 7 to 10, Now I mean like granny panties. I know they aren't our favorite or most sexy pairs of underwear, BUT! For one, when I was pregnant I could not stand anything form fitting and suffocating to my bottom half so I opted for granny panties towards the end. And boy am I glad I did. After birth, my big granny panties were of great assistance for holding the giant pads in place. I never had to wear the netted panties because my granny panties secured the pads better! I definitely preferred it that way.

NURSING TANKS

Secret Treasures Maternity Nursing Cami - Wal-Mart - $9.94

-- 2 to 3, Nursing tanks can easily replace nursing bras. Obviously for better comfort as well, instead of just a bra, we can now nurse very discreetly while still covering the tummy. I slept in my nursing tanks a lot.

REUSABLE NURSING PADS

NuAngel Natural Cotton Washable Nursing Pads, 8 COUNT - Wal-Mart - $9.99

-- 8 sets, 10/10 recommend these. Definitely an essential when it comes to post partum or even late pregnancy [I started leaking colostrum towards the end of each pregnancy.] I recommend the reusable ones just for the simple fact that they are washable and can be reused over and over again vs. the cotton/gauzy, yucky disposable ones.

TOPS

BASIC SHORT SLEEVED SHIRTS

Time and Tru Woman's Maternity Short Sleeve T-Shirt, 2-Pack - Wal-Mart - $16.88

2 to 3, I recommend a few basic colored short sleeved shirts, the ones with the cute framed sides. I'd aim for a black one, gray one and white one. If you go for the more neutral colors, try olive green, brown & black! Essential for any capsule wardrobe.

BASIC LONG SLEEVED SHIRTS

Time and True Woman's Maternity Long Sleeve T-Shirt, 2-Pack - Wal-Mart - $16.88

2 to 3, really only necessary if you're pregnant in the fall/winter time. Of course, an essential basic top is going to be the perfect addition to your closet. Can be layered up or simply leave as is!

PATTERNED SHORT SLEEVED SHIRTS

Jchiup Woman's Short Sleeved Rouched Floral Maternity Shirt - Wal-Mart - $14.09

2 to 4, patterned shirts if that's your thing. Adding patterns to your closet is always helpful, I feel like patterns can be useful in dressing an outfit up.

BOTTOMS

LEGGINGS

Maternity Oh! Mama Leggings with Full-Panel, 2-pack - Wal-Mart - $16.99

3 to 4, I don't know about you, but I am the lady with four different pairs of black leggings and I am not ashamed one bit. Same goes for maternity wear. We need the basic leggings with the stretchy belly. Throw on an oversized shirt and BOOM. We're ready, and not to mention, we feel like we're wearing jammies while we're at it. WINNING.

JEANS

High Waist Denim Maternity Pants - Wal-Mart - $21.56

1 to 2, for the days when we HAVE to put on a pair of jeans. It's quite dreading just even thinking about it. On a positive note, pregnancy jeans are literally a dream. They are forced to be made of the "jegging" material most of the time which is a blessing.

SEASONAL

DRESSES

Oh! Mama Maternity 3/4 Sleeved Dress - Wal-Mart - $11.50

Oh! Mama Bodycon Maternity Short Sleeve Dress - Wal-Mart - $8.50

2 to 3, I was one of the fortunate to be pregnant throughout the summer/fall with my first and spring/summer with my second. As you can imagine, being pregnant plus hot sun do not mix well. I LIVED in sundresses. Of course, the pictured dresses are specifically for maternity wear. But I had a ton of pre-pregnancy sundresses that worked amazing for my growing belly. I got the best of both worlds being able to wear them all throughout the different stages of my body during pregnancy and post partum.

SHORTS

Pat Pat Maternity Shorts - Wal-Mart - $12.99

1 to 2 pairs, shorts are nice to have for the days you don't feel like wearing a dress. I loved the full panel denim shorts, they were SO comfy, I hardly even felt like I was wearing "denim shorts"

SWIM SUIT

Glow & Grow Swim Suit - Wal-Mart - $19.99

One suit! That's it. There's no need for more than one. Swimming is an amazing exercise while pregnant and it relieves so much pressure off of your back and pelvic area. It really is quite a weird feeling at first, but so rewarding to have the weight be lifted for a short amount of time.

OUTDOOR COAT

Momo Maternity - Maternity Wool Coat - Wal-Mart - $99.00

One coat! Just like that we switches seasons, and really, this is totally going to depend on where you live. I live in Michigan, where the winters are extremely wintery. Coats are a must and not an option here. I didn't purchase a coat with my other pregnancies [I had them before snow hit] but I know if I were to be big and pregnant in the winter, I am definitely going to be purchasing a nice maternity coat for those cold winter days.

Now that I gave you an idea of what to look for, I hope you this has inspired you to take a trip to your local thrift shop and possibly bargain your maternity wardrobe or just start your stock pile of those amazing clearance finds that you just can't pass up.
